PATHFINDER COUNCIL POINTS THE WAY WITH TRAVEL INFOSYSTEMS

Wandsworth Borough Council Selects Travel InfoSystems' Journey Planner

Travel InfoSystems, the travel planning software specialists, today announced the signing of an agreement with Wandsworth Borough Council, to supply the local authority with a UK rail and Tube journey planner on its website - www.wandsworth.gov.uk/travel. By providing an online journey planner Wandsworth is giving its local residents an easy way to plan journeys by public transport. Wandsworth is the largest inner London Borough, serving some 260,000 residents

“In order to draw residents to our website, we have to offer genuinely useful services,” explains Steve Mayner, Head of Public Affairs, Wandsworth Borough Council. “A journey planner is a great service to offer on our website. We selected Travel InfoSystems' journey planner, as it is a really practical hands-on solution that anyone can use. This is proven by the feedback we have received, it is the most popular innovation we have introduced recently.”

Wandsworth has recently been awarded Pathfinder status for developing its Geographical Information Systems (GIS) capabilities. The Pathfinder initiatives are projects selected for special funding by the Department of Transport and Local Government Regions (DTLR) as examples of best practice in e-government. Wandsworth intends to use some of this money to create a GIS function in its travel planning service.

“Our transport strategy is based on the principle that the environment comes first. Through this we aim to promote the use of alternative transport, decrease car use and support large scale investment in public transport,” explains Mayner. “Effective travel information, which allows people to accurately plan their journey, estimate the time it will take and find the connections they need to make in advance, will encourage them to leave the car behind.”

Staff and citizens of Wandsworth are able to access the free service through the council’s website - www.wandsworth.gov.uk/travel. The website’s travel section includes train station location maps, roadwork bulletins and useful links, as well as the councils transport strategy.
