HAFAS System
At the heart of the CityPlanner and RailPlanner systems is HAFAS - Europe's premier journey planning software engine, which allows complex multi-modal journeys to be calculated. HAFAS is currently in use in ten countries by over 30 transport companies and authorities, on three continents.
The HAFAS-Algorithm has been developed and refined constantly over the years. The innovative technologies which have been developed enable users not only to find the fastest connections but also more convenient connections which involve fewer changes, or more cost-efficient connections with a lower fare.
In Europe, the HAFAS system is used by of seven European railways and German states for the provision of travel information. In peak times, the central computer of Deutsche Bahn AG calculates more than 300, 000 connections per hour using the HAFAS algorithm.
HAFAS runs on a variety of diverse computer platforms, from TANDEM or IBM mainframe systems to the new Windows CE operating system for handheld and pocket PCs, as well as on HP-UX or Linux. HAFAS has been designed as an open system. Although data is supplied via a specific format (ASCII), the information is freely accessible. In addition, interfaces exist to all major timetable or duty roster management programs and to print media, which means that a tranfer of third-party data is a relatively simple process.
